Adaobiz Fiction- ‘OMALU
“Please travel safe Omalu” Zimuzo said again, she had zipped his case and was reaching out for his cufflinks. Omalu stood before the dressing mirror 6’2 tall knotting his burgundy tie whilst admiring how broad his shoulders had become since he began to gym six months back.
“Chim ga gozi gi ego oyibo m (my God will bless you my ego oyibo),starting this walk of friendship with you was one of the best decisions I ever made. You have made life easier and worth living for me” Omalu said straightening his tie and looking at his wife through the mirror with a smile while she arranged his files on the table.
“Amen” Zimuzo responded smiling back and wondering why her husband had taken to praises that morning, it was something his work schedules had denied her the privilege of hearing. For what it was worth she totally enjoyed listening to him tell her how much he appreciated what they share.
“I know it has been work, work, and work for me and no time for you and Kobi. I promise to take a leave after this trip to spend more time with you both inugo? (Have you heard?)”
Zimuzo had tears in her eyes, she tried to suppress them but the more she thought about it the more the tears came. She had begged Omalu not to take up the promotion because of the commitment involved but he had refused because it was going to kill his chances of getting to the zenith of his career. She missed the closeness they shared, it was tearing her apart.
“No problem, I hope you keep to your word this time” She said wiping the tears from her eyes
“Please don’t cry ego oyibo m, I promise. I also promise to look into stepping down like we discussed. It’s affecting my relationship with you and Kobi, I can’t afford it” Omalu held his wife and with his clean napkin he gently wiped the tears off her eyes, her protruding tummy brushed against his body and he could feel the little one’s kick. He kissed her lips passionately and she chuckled, she was beginning to wish that his flight got cancelled so that they could take the day off.
His accepting to reconsider and step down at work was one of the best news she had heard all year, she was sure things would get back to how it was or better. She smiled and hugged him
“Please travel safe Omalu” she said looking into his eyes. He saw fear and worry in hers, they were always there anytime he was set to embark on any journey
“I will ego oyibo m, I will”
Sitting through at the hospital reception waiting patiently for her turn to see the gynecologist, Zimuzo wondered what life would have been like if she were not married to her husband.
She chuckled as she remembered how she told him it was over between them during their courtship days because he had forgotten her birthday, Omalu had looked at her and said
“I said you should tell me what I can do to make up for my mistake, I didn’t ask you to kill me” She eventually asked him to write her 27 love letters which he did, she had stored them in her box and would often bring them out to read. She smiled and looked at her phone, it was 12.04pm and she hadn’t heard from him. His flight was 7am and she was sure he had arrived his destination by that time, she began to dial his numbers but they were switched off.
“…Nurse please change that channel to a news channel. What is this news that I am hearing about plane crash?” a visitor said as he walked briskly into the reception hall.
Zimuzo heard “plane crash” and began trembling, the nurse immediately changed the channel
“…the plane with flight number EU 204 which was said to have departed from Lagos this morning enroute Abuja had 60 passengers, a six cabin crew and two pilots. According to NAMA officials the cause of the plane crash remains unknown but the bodies of all 68 victims have been found. Here are the names of the passengers on board as written on the manifest”
Zimuzo and the rest of the people in the reception moved a bit closer to the television screen as they looked through the list of passengers. Then, she saw it boldly written: ONYEMALUWA CARITAS ONUOHA
…strolling down the park whilst holding her son Kobi three months after, Zimuzo began to convince herself that Omalu wasn’t coming back to them though for a second she could feel his presence walking beside her…
